What Is Power Skating?
Power skating is specialized training focused on improving a hockey player's skating mechanics, speed, agility, and efficiency on the ice. Unlike regular hockey practice where skating is incidental, power skating isolates skating as the primary skill being developed.
A good power skating program covers:
- Stride technique: Full extension, knee bend, arm drive, and recovery
- Crossovers: Both directions, in tight turns and wide arcs
- Stops and starts: Hockey stops, T-stops, and explosive starts from various positions
- Backward skating: C-cuts, crossovers, and transitions
- Agility: Pivots, mohawk turns, and edge work
- Speed: Acceleration, top-end speed, and maintaining speed through turns
When Should Your Child Start?
- Ages 5-6: If your child can skate independently, a beginner power skating class focused on balance and edges can be beneficial
- Ages 7-8: This is the most common starting age. Players are developmentally ready to absorb technique corrections
- Ages 9-12: Critical window for skating development. If your child has never done power skating, now is the time
- Ages 13+: Absolutely still valuable. Even WHL and NHL players work on skating mechanics
The short answer: it is never too early or too late to work on skating.
What to Look for in a Winnipeg Power Skating Program
1. Qualified Instructors
Look for instructors with specific skating credentials. Figure skating backgrounds are common and highly effective.
2. Small Group Sizes
A ratio of no more than 10-12 skaters per instructor is ideal. Avoid programs that pack 30+ skaters on the ice with one coach.
3. Age-Appropriate Instruction
Make sure the program groups players by age and ability.
4. Progressive Curriculum
A progressive program (6-8 weeks) with consistent coaching yields much better results than drop-ins.
